A comparative assessment of voltage ride-through test profiles in PRC-029-1

PRC-029-1 sets ride-through requirements as voltage-time tables but does not define the test profile. Using EMT simulation of a 200 MW wind plant, the paper compared three test approaches: isolated faults with full recovery and sequential steps with a 10-second recovery both passed, while sequential steps with no recovery tripped. Same plant and settings, different results, so the paper calls for a clearer profile definition or guidance coordinated with IEEE 2800-2022.

Paper 10545, with co-authors including Poria Astero.

Large load modeling and impact on the bulk power system

Large data center loads behave differently from traditional industrial load, and planning models and standards have not kept up. Poria covered voltage ride-through for large loads, phasor versus EMT modeling, and how forced oscillations from AI training loads can cause torsional fatigue in nearby generators, ending with recommendations for performance standards, modeling requirements and a harmonized study workflow.

Title slide: Automated Model Verification for IBR Dynamic Models

ESIG O&M Workshop 2026 / Kansas City / April 1, 2026

Automated model verification for IBR dynamic models

IBR dynamic models often do not match the settings installed in the field, and manual review takes hours per plant. Tom showed a deterministic pipeline that extracts parameters from PSCAD and PSS/E models, maps them across 12 OEM model formats, and compares them with as-left settings to flag mismatches.

The AI workshop at the ESIG O&M Users Group meeting in Kansas City

ESIG O&M Workshop 2026 / Kansas City / March 31, 2026

Introduction to AI for grid operations and maintenance

A five-session, hands-on workshop for utility and developer engineering teams on practical AI: how the tools work, data security, personal and team use, professional tools in transmission, and a live exercise extracting obligations from a public MISO interconnection agreement.

The evolving grid code landscape

Where IBR grid codes are heading and what developers and owners should do about it: the three Order 901 Milestone 2 standards (PRC-028, PRC-029, PRC-030), lessons from ERCOT's NOGRR 245 ride-through work, why the standards should be run as one program, and the coming wave of model quality requirements.
