Standards
FERC Order No. 901, issued in October 2023, directed NERC to write new reliability standards for inverter-based resources. PRC-029-2 ride-through and PRC-030-1 event mitigation are the first of that wave of standards written for a power-electronics grid. GridStrong takes every plant through each of them the same way, with the same inputs, the same steps and the same evidence, so nothing is left to chase.
PRC-029-2 · Ride-through
PRC-029-2 requires Generator Owners to show that inverter-based resources ride through voltage and frequency disturbances: ride-through capability, current and power priority settings, active power recovery, and the documentation to prove it. It applies to solar, wind, storage and hybrid plants: the design requirements apply to BES resources from October 1, 2026 and to applicable non-BES resources from January 1, 2027. Once PRC-028-1 disturbance monitoring is in place, it also carries ongoing operational obligations.
As-left inverter, turbine and relay settings are extracted from the source files, the ride-through curve is built from them, and sixteen tests independently model and verify each Requirement and Part of the standard.
The evaluation starts with what exists today, determines whether an exemption is required, and takes future OEM firmware into account as a revision rather than a restart.
The same evaluation flags whether a TOV study, an insulation coordination review or a PRC-019 study is now triggered, so related work is scoped once.
For plants that cannot meet a requirement because of hardware limits, the exemption is prepared as part of the same evaluation: technical justification, documented limitation, engineering analysis, and submittal to the Planning Coordinator, Transmission Planner, Transmission Operator, Reliability Coordinator and Compliance Enforcement Authority. Plants in service by October 1, 2026 whose owners were already responsible for compliance submit by October 1, 2027. PRC-029-2 also opens the exemption to qualifying long-lead projects that enter service later, on a 90-day track.
PRC-030-1 · Unexpected event mitigation
PRC-030-1 is NERC's standard for unexpected changes in Real Power output from inverter-based resources. Generator Owners with BES-connected plants, and certain non-BES plants above capacity thresholds, must identify qualifying events, analyze each one, and mitigate performance issues through Corrective Action Plans or technical justification. Ride-through sets the performance requirement; PRC-030-1 governs what happens after the event.
Plant SCADA, historian, PMU, SER and DFR data come into the Dashboard, your thresholds are applied, and qualifying events are flagged and logged. Nobody waits for a disturbance report.
Characterize the event, document ride-through performance, capture reactive response, record root cause. Consistent across plants, units and OEMs, and ready for the RC, BA or TOP when they ask.
Corrective Action Plans are created, assigned and tracked in the record, with OEM coordination and implementation status visible at the fleet level.
PRC-028-1 · Disturbance monitoring
PRC-028-1 requires sequence-of-events, fault and dynamic disturbance recording at inverter-based plants, and the documentation that proves each recorder captures what the standard requires. GridStrong builds the plant's equipment record from its own files, assesses every requirement against it, and cites the page behind every answer.
Common questions
The old way aggregates files from departments and OEMs into a file share, then trades spreadsheet versions over email for weeks. In GridStrong the whole process runs in the software, with our engineers alongside yours, fixed pricing, live status, and the data stored so the next standard reuses it.
Yes. The Dashboard connects to your current documentation systems during migration and takes over the trackers and spreadsheets plant by plant, so nothing stops working while it moves. Your teams, procedures and modeling tools come with it.
PRC-019, PRC-024, MOD-025, MOD-026, MOD-027, MOD-032 and the ISO and regional variants run on the same record with the same evidence model. 135,000 grid-code requirements across North America are indexed to the page and mapped to each plant.
