PRC-019-2 Control, Capability and Protection Coordination Study

Coordination of voltage regulating controls, limit functions, equipment capability and protection settings for each inverter-based plant.

About this module

What this module covers.

NERC PRC-019-2 requires Generator Owners and Transmission Owners of synchronous condensers to verify coordination of generating unit facility or synchronous condenser voltage regulating controls, limit functions, equipment capabilities and protection system settings.

This module performs the technical studies that develop your PRC-019-2 compliance evidence for each inverter-based resource (IBR) plant and coordinates the work, so that each plant's voltage regulation controls, limit functions and equipment capability are coordinated.

At a glance

Module: 031
Kind: Modeling studies
Governing body: NERC
Applies to: Operating plants
Typical time: Two to three weeks, all in, including your review

Dashboard capabilities

  • Automated Compliance Workflow for PRC-019-2

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Gather all site-specific key data and documentation related to IBR plant manufacturer capability curves, test data, or other information; control system settings; protection system settings; etc.
  • Perform a detailed coordination analysis assessment comparing the protection system settings with the generator's operating limits (capability) and control system limits to ensure proper coordination. Ensure that:
    • Protection trips are expected to only occur outside normal operating capabilities
    • Voltage regulation limits are within the protection system limits and IBR plant capabilities
    • Overcurrent, volts per hertz (V/Hz), and capacitor overvoltage protections are properly coordinated
  • Review results and document the study, key findings, and evidence of coordination within the IBR plant.

Final deliverables

  • PRC-019-2 Report.

What we need from you

  • Main power transformer damage curves and any other pertinent equipment voltage and frequency ratings
  • Real and reactive power (PQ) capability of the inverters or turbines at site operating temperature
  • Capacitor bank short-time overvoltage capability
  • The following maximized protection settings of the IBR plant:
    • All overcurrent protection parameters and locations
    • V-Hz protection(s)
