PRC-025-2 Generator Relay Loadability Evaluation

Load-responsive relays set to avoid unnecessary tripping during disturbances that pose no risk to the equipment.

About this module

What this module covers.

NERC PRC-025-2 requires Generator Owners to set load-responsive protective relays associated with generation Facilities at a level to prevent unnecessary tripping of generators during a system disturbance for conditions that do not pose a risk of damage to the associated equipment.

This module covers the technical assessment and studies to develop compliance evidence for NERC PRC-025-2 for each IBR plant.

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Identify all applicable protective elements in the IBR plant for PRC-025-2 evaluation such as relay elements 21, 50, 51, 67 and 51V.
  • Collect and analyze the relay protection settings for applicable elements. Evaluate the settings of each applicable element against the loadability criteria of the applicable PRC-025-2 Attachment 1 option, and check coordination with the plant's PRC-029-2 ride-through curves.
  • Select the applicable evaluation methods per Attachment 1 of PRC-025-2 for each element.
  • For each applicable protective function, perform the applicable evaluation and document whether the existing settings are compliant. If settings are non-compliant, develop a corrective action plan to adjust the settings.
  • Document analysis including protective function IDs, evaluation method(s) used, setting values and thresholds, results, corrective action plans needed, etc.
  • Provide recommendations for changes to settings, if required.
  • Note: Relay loadability should also be coordinated and aligned with ride-through performance, capability curves, protection coordination, and model validation efforts.

Final deliverables

  • PRC-025-2 Compliance Evaluation Report, including inventory of protection functions and settings, evaluation and results, and any corrective actions as needed.
  • Recommended updates to relay settings and plant protection/control documentation where necessary to support PRC-025-2 requirements.

What we need from you

  • Generating unit data and type
