PRC-027-1 Protection Coordination Study

Protection systems coordinated so they operate in the intended sequence during faults on BES elements.

About this module

What this module covers.

NERC PRC-027-1 requires Generator Owners to maintain the coordination of protection systems installed to detect and isolate faults on BES elements such that those protection systems operate in the intended sequence during Faults.

This module covers the technical assessment and studies to develop compliance evidence for NERC PRC-027-1 for each IBR plant.

At a glance

Module: 033
Kind: Modeling studies
Governing body: NERC
Applies to: Operating plants
Typical time: Two to three weeks, all in, including your review

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Review and assess the IBR plant protection system coordination studies and protection relay settings implemented throughout the plant.
  • Review short-circuit model data for applicable BES Elements at each applicable plant and review current fault current data and past fault current baseline data.
  • Identify the protection system functions applicable to Requirement R2 (i.e., 21, 50, 51, 67).
  • Conduct a protection coordination study per PRC-027-1 guidelines, recommendations, and requirements, to ensure that all applicable protective elements are coordinated in such a manner that the resource is expected to ride through while protecting equipment.
  • Identify any protection system coordination issues and report issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Document assumptions, analysis, results, and findings in a NERC PRC-027-1 Compliance Evaluation report.

Final deliverables

  • PRC-027-1 Compliance Evaluation Report, including inventory of protection functions and settings, evaluation and results, and any corrective actions as needed.
  • Recommended updates to relay settings and plant protection/control documentation where necessary to support PRC-027-1 requirements.

What we need from you

  • List of BES elements and associated protection systems
  • Relay diagrams, protection and control configurations, protection calculation sheets, protection philosophy documents, and relay settings files
  • Fault current data and models reflecting current operating conditions
  • Records of any changes to system topology or configuration affecting protection coordination
  • Documentation of procedures for protection system setting development and coordination
  • Generating unit data and type
  • Plant single line diagram and grounding configuration
  • IBR unit and plant capability curve (from testing, reports, or OEMs)
  • Voltage and frequency ride-through capability data
  • For any BES Elements at applicable plants that electrically join Facilities owned by separate functional entities, provide the protection system information and settings from those Facilities owned by separate entities
  • NERC MOD-025, MOD-026/MOD-027, PRC-019, PRC-024 and PRC-029 reports (if available)
  • Existing NERC PRC-027-1 process for developing new and revised protection system settings
  • Previous PRC-027-1 coordination studies and fault current baseline data over the past six years
