MOD-025-2 Real and Reactive Capability Verification

Gross and net real and reactive capability verified at the point of measurement and packaged for the planning models.

About this module

What this module covers.

NERC MOD-025-2 requires Generator Owners (GOs) to ensure that accurate information on generator gross and net Real and Reactive Power capability is available for planning models used to assess Bulk Electric System (BES) reliability. The standard applies to the following facilities: BES individual generating units > 20 MVA (gross nameplate rating), BES synchronous condensers > 20 MVA (gross nameplate rating), and BES generating plants > 75 MVA (gross aggregate nameplate rating). This module covers digitizing the test results, active and reactive power verification assessment, and associated compliance documentation to support your compliance preparedness for NERC MOD-025-2.

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

Task 1: Documentation Review and Data Collection

  • Advise you on data requirements and provide guidance on data collection to ensure alignment with NERC MOD-025-2 requirements. Data may include: generator nameplate ratings (MW/MVAR), manufacturer test reports, prior test results, excitation and governor control system data.
  • Review the provided data and provide feedback on the accuracy, consistency, and usability of the data.

Task 2: Support Generator Test Procedure Development and Day-Of Testing (as Needed)

  • Provide supplemental support for generator test procedure development consistent with MOD-025-2 Attachment 1 including testing gross and net real/reactive power verification and reactive capability curve plotting.
  • Coordinate with plant operations team for day-of testing support, as needed.

Task 3: Active and Reactive Power Capability Verification

  • Gather test data and conduct an analysis of the tested generator capability against nameplate and expected values.
  • Record and plot all documentation as needed per Attachment 2 of MOD-025-2.
  • Analyze whether unit(s) meets or deviates from capability and document any specific issues.
  • Engineering analyses may be used, but are not required, to determine the expected applicable Facility capabilities under less restrictive system voltages, if a voltage limit is hit.

Task 4: MOD-025-2 Evidence Package Preparation

  • Prepare full evidence documentation package, including: test procedures, plots and test data, supporting calculations and test equipment calibration records, completed Attachment 2 forms for your submittal to the Transmission Planner and Compliance Enforcement Authority (CEA).

Final deliverables

  • Compiled site documentation, test data, capability plots and supporting calculations.
  • Completed Attachment 2 of MOD-025-2 for submittal to the Transmission Planner.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • You perform the field tests and provide the necessary data and measurement results.
  • We can guide and support you or your EPC firms in conducting the tests but do not conduct them directly. We can be on site for these tests if needed; travel reimbursement and time are additional costs that you pre-authorize.
  • We will use engineering judgment and best practices to complete this project, if needed, where site-specific information is not available from you.
