ERCOT NOGRR 245 Maximization Model Updates and Verification

Model updates when NOGRR 245 compliance changes inverter, turbine or relay settings, with verification and OEM coordination.

About this module

What this module covers.

When Nodal Operating Guide Revision Request (NOGRR) 245 compliance requires parameter changes or equipment updates to inverters, turbines, or balance of plant relays, the inverter-based resource (IBR) plant models (PSCAD, PSS/E, TSAT) must be updated to reflect those changes. This module updates the models for the plants you select, with high-level model verification and coordination with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on parameter guidance.

At a glance

Module: 039
Kind: Modeling studies
Governing body: ERCOT
Applies to: Operating plants
Typical time: Two to three weeks, all in, including your review

Dashboard capabilities

  • Model Workspace Management: your plant's simulation model files kept in one dashboard workspace, with version tracking
  • PSCAD Simulations
  • PSS/E Simulations
  • TSAT Simulations

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Update the inverters/turbines models in PSCAD, PSS/E, and TSAT (where applicable) to reflect the maximized protection and control settings provided by the OEM. For the PSCAD model as well as PSS/E/TSAT user-defined models (UDM), the OEM shall provide guidance on parameters in the model(s) that correspond to the changes made to the actual equipment.
  • Add the necessary voltage and frequency protections to the balance of plant relays (e.g., medium voltage and high voltage buses) that are missing from the models using standard library models that are available in each software platform, if needed.
  • To ensure accuracy and consistency across models, perform high level model verification:
    • Crosscheck the models (PSCAD, PSS/E, and TSAT) to ensure electrical components match each other including for example the online tap changer, if applicable.
    • Verify that the power plant controller (PPC) and inverter/turbine control parameters in all models (PSCAD, PSS/E, and TSAT) match the maximized settings provided by the OEM.
    • If the PSS/E model is a standard library model (generic), the parameters may not match one to one, but any notable discrepancies will be flagged and can be modified after your approval.

Final deliverables

  • Updated PSCAD, PSS/E, and TSAT models.
  • A short synopsis report summarizing the updates made to the models and the model checks performed.

What we need from you

  • Maximized inverters/turbines/PPC settings as approved by the OEM for voltage/frequency protection and anti-islanding, phase jump, and rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) protection, if applicable.
  • Guidance from the OEM on the parameters in the PSCAD and UDM models that correspond to the changes made to the actual equipment, and updated models from OEMs, where applicable.
  • Online tap changer parameters for the main power transformer, if applicable (control range, step size, etc.).
  • Updated maximized balance of plant voltage and frequency relay protection settings that a qualified protection engineer has deemed maximized, reviewed, and approved.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • You supply OEM-approved maximized settings and parameter guidance for all required models.
  • We will use engineering judgment to flag any discrepancies between standard library models and the as-left configuration.
  • This scope includes one OEM coordination cycle; further rounds are additional support, approved in writing.
