Transient Overvoltage Study

Transient overvoltage restudy where extended ride-through capability requires it, scoped from the ride-through workflow.

About this module

What this module covers.

For certain plants, extension of the ride-through capability of the turbines/inverters may require a transient over-voltage (TOV) restudy based upon engineering judgment. This module performs the TOV study for each applicable plant and coordinates the work.

At a glance

Module: 041
Kind: Modeling studies
Governing body: Any region
Applies to: Operating plants
Typical time: Four to five weeks from receipt of your data

Dashboard capabilities

  • Model Workspace Management: your plant's simulation model files kept in one dashboard workspace, with version tracking
  • PSCAD Simulations

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Perform a TOV study or demonstrate that any switching devices, such as breakers, capacitor switchers, and surge arresters are properly rated for their expected duty after modifying the ride-through capability of the inverter-based resource (IBR) plant. The PSCAD model will model the detailed feeder cable segments and individual inverters.

Load Rejection Study:

  • Analyze the maximum TOV expected when the inverters/turbines are operating at full rated power, and a fault occurs on the feeder side causing the feeder breaker to open.
  • A single-line-to-ground (SLG) fault is applied at two locations, the longest and shortest collector feeders, at various points on wave. An SLG is also applied at the collector medium voltage bus.
  • Simulation results are analyzed to identify the impact of the worst-case TOVs on equipment and protection settings.

Final deliverables

  • Transient Overvoltage Study Report.
  • Delivered within four to five weeks of receiving and verifying your data, for up to four plants per month.

What we need from you

  • Detailed PSS/E model (if available)
  • Single line diagram of facility
  • Breaker data sheet for all breakers in the facility
  • Basic Insulation Level (BIL) for feeder buses
  • Surge arrester I-V characteristics, datasheets and locations
  • Transformer datasheet and saturation data
