ERCOT Model Quality Tests, Benchmarking and Tuning

ERCOT Dynamic Working Group model quality tests run on the plant's models before field implementation, with benchmarking and tuning.

About this module

What this module covers.

For changes to inverter-based resource (IBR) sites that require updates to models (i.e., new development projects, changes to existing sites, etc.), the updated models must be simulated against ERCOT's Model Quality Tests (MQT) as described by ERCOT's Dynamics Working Group (DWG) Procedure Manual prior to any field implementations. This module conducts the MQT studies for the plants you select and coordinates the work.

At a glance

Module: 042
Kind: Modeling studies
Governing body: ERCOT
Applies to: Before and after commercial operation
Typical time: Two to three weeks, all in, including your review

Dashboard capabilities

  • Automated Compliance Workflow for ERCOT MQT
  • Model Workspace Management: your plant's simulation model files kept in one dashboard workspace, with version tracking
  • PSCAD Simulations
  • PSS/E Simulations

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

Perform all Model Quality Tests (MQT), both legacy and preferred, as required in ERCOT's Dynamics Working Group Procedure Manual Revision 25, including:

  • Flat Start
  • Small Voltage Disturbance
  • Small Frequency Disturbance (With and Without Headroom)
  • Low Voltage Ride Through (Both "Legacy" and "Voltage Dip" Tests in both Leading and Lagging Initial Power Factors)
  • High Voltage Ride Through (Both "Legacy" and "Preferred" Tests in both Leading and Lagging Initial Power Factors)
  • System Strength
  • Phase Angle Jump (PSCAD Only)
  • Benchmark the results of each test from different simulation model(s) by overlaying the responses on top of each other. Mismatches that cannot be resolved by tuning, because of model deficiencies or bugs that need original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support, cost extra.
  • Compare the results of the simulation model(s) before and after the proposed modification changes are made in the models per Section 5.5(6) of ERCOT Planning Guide: Generator Interconnection or Modification.

Final deliverables

  • A Model Quality Test (MQT) report including results from all the tests.
  • Updated models for PSCAD, PSS/E, and TSAT (if required) in the appropriate completed universal dynamic model and PSCAD templates.

What we need from you

  • Latest PSCAD, PSS/E and TSAT (if required) simulation models including collector system, main power transformer, power plant controller, and all necessary control and protection.
  • Accompanying model and site documentation.
  • Single line diagram of IBR plant.
  • User manuals and documentation, including instructions for setup and running the models.
  • Other information, as requested.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • PSCAD models are compatible with PSCAD version 4.6.3 or later.
  • PSCAD models are compatible with IVF compiler version 15 or later as well as Visual Studio 2015 or later.
  • We use engineering judgment and best practices to correct or otherwise provide guidance on model deficiencies we identify.
  • You supply all required models.
  • This scope includes one round of corrections with the developer or OEM to review and correct discrepancies; further rounds are additional support, approved in writing.
