CAISO EMT Model Quality Testing

PSCAD simulations mirroring CAISO's electromagnetic transient model quality validation checks, with the evidence and reports generated from the record.

About this module

What this module covers.

This module digitizes and automates the collection and review of information and guides you through the compliance process, generating the evidence and reports that verify compliance and keep you compliant during your subscription. Using the module, we conduct PSCAD simulations that closely mirror CAISO's electromagnetic transient (EMT) model quality testing (MQT) validation checklist.

We will also run high-level checks between the PSCAD model and the PSLF model seeking to identify discrepancies and generate a Compliance Report, an approximately 10-page report per plant summarizing the model quality and validation studies and any recommendations.

At a glance

  • PSCAD Simulations

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Gather all required source documentation from you and any third parties.
  • Manage all source documentation in the Dashboard and review initial analysis in the Dashboard.

Perform all Model Quality Tests (MQT), including the following PSCAD scenarios:

  • No-fault test
  • Small disturbance voltage test
  • Small disturbance frequency test
  • High/low voltage ride-through tests
  • High/low frequency ride-through tests
  • Three-phase to ground fault at the point of interconnection (POI)
  • Single-phase to ground fault at the POI
  • System strength test
  • Make adjustments and re-run models until all requirements are met.
  • Comprehensive expert review of all deliverables produced in the Dashboard, including without limitation the draft and final Compliance Report.

Final deliverables

  • Final PSCAD model.
  • Final CAISO EMT MQT report including results from all the tests.

What we need from you

  • Single-line diagram of each plant.
  • The PSCAD models of the entire plant for each project including collector system, main power transformer, power plant controller, and all necessary control and protection.
  • The PSLF dynamic model of the plant used in the CAISO interconnection or validation studies.
  • User manuals and documentation, including instructions for setup and running the models.
  • Other information as requested.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • PSCAD models are compatible with PSCAD version 4.6.3 or later.
  • PSCAD models are compatible with IVF compiler version 15 or later as well as Visual Studio 2015 or later.
  • We use engineering judgment and best practices to correct or otherwise provide guidance on model deficiencies we identify.
  • You supply both the PSLF and PSCAD models.
  • This scope of work includes engaging with the developer or original manufacturer for reviewing and correcting discrepancies.
