ERCOT QSA Module Package

The PSCAD dynamic model package, model quality tests, reactive power study and planning data required before the quarterly stability assessment.

About this module

What this module covers.

This module develops the plant PSCAD dynamic model package and performs the model quality tests (MQT) described in the Dynamics Working Group (DWG) Procedure Manual in accordance with ERCOT Planning Guide Section 5.5(4). We also develop the detailed plant model, perform the reactive power study, and complete the required planning data in ERCOT's Resource Integration and Ongoing Operations Interconnection Services (RIOO-IS) system as prerequisites for the Quarterly Stability Assessment (QSA) specified in Planning Guide Section 5.3.5(4), coordinating the work and supporting your ERCOT submissions.

At a glance

Module: 050
Kind: Interconnection studies
Governing body: ERCOT
Applies to: Before commercial operation
Typical time: Model packages in two to three weeks; the rest follows the operator's calendar

Dashboard capabilities

  • Automated Compliance Workflow for ERCOT MQT
  • Model Workspace Management: your plant's simulation model files kept in one dashboard workspace, with version tracking
  • PSCAD Simulations
  • PSS/E Simulations
  • TSAT Simulations

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

Task 1: Develop the plant dynamic model package (PSS/E and PSCAD models)

Task 2: Develop the plant TSAT model if the PSS/E model is a user-defined model (UDM)

Task 3: Perform all MQT, both legacy and preferred, as required in ERCOT's Dynamics Working Group Procedure Manual Revision 25, including:

  • Flat Start
  • Small Voltage Disturbance
  • Small Frequency Disturbance (With and Without Headroom)
  • Low Voltage Ride Through (Both "Legacy" and "Voltage Dip" Tests in both Leading and Lagging Initial Power Factors)
  • High Voltage Ride Through (Both "Legacy" and "Preferred" Tests in both Leading and Lagging Initial Power Factors)
  • System Strength
  • Phase Angle Jump (PSCAD Only)
  • Benchmark the results of each test from different simulation model(s) by overlaying the responses and tuning the dynamic models to achieve alignment.

Task 4: Develop a detailed plant model and perform the reactive study according to the ERCOT reactive study scope document to determine the reactive devices needed to meet the ERCOT voltage support requirements.

  • Calculate the gross dynamic reactive capability and fill out the reactive device inventory.
  • Calculate the net reactive performance capability of the plant at the point of interconnection (POI) at various operating points described in the reactive study scope document.

Task 5: Complete the planning model data in RIOO-IS based on the latest design parameters and engineering calculations

Final deliverables

  • Dynamic models for PSCAD, PSS/E in the appropriate completed universal dynamic model and PSCAD templates.
  • An MQT report, including overlaid simulation results for PSS/E, TSAT (if PSS/E is UDM) and PSCAD responses.
  • A reactive power study report and detailed PSS/E power flow model.
  • RIOO-IS substation data online forms for planning model data.

What we need from you

  • Latest design settings for the inverter-based resource (IBR), if available.
  • Design drawing package including but not limited to substation and collector single-line diagrams, protection settings, and other relevant design drawings and documentation, if available.
  • Latest turbine standard manufacturer TSAT (if PSS/E is UDM), PSCAD models along with documentation, PQ curves, and all necessary control and protection.
  • Test reports or nameplate pictures of unit step up transformers and main station transformers, as well as the transformer load tap changer or de-energized tap changer (LTC/DETC) data sheet, as applicable.
  • Balance of plant (BOP) protection data, if available.
  • Data including cable scheduling or parameters of the collector system, auxiliary loads, gen-tie data, switchable shunt devices, auxiliary load, etc., if available.
  • User manuals, datasheets, documentation, and attestations from the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) including instructions for setting up and running the models.
  • Other information required to complete the scope of work for each project may be requested during the execution of each project, as deemed necessary.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • We use engineering judgment and best practices to correct or otherwise provide guidance on model deficiencies we identify.
  • You supply all required models and site-specific documentation for the interconnection request.
  • You supply all OEM datasheets, modeling files and instructions for the selected turbines or inverters.
  • This scope includes one round of corrections with the developer or OEM to review and correct discrepancies; further rounds are additional support, approved in writing.
  • You provide the project substation and collector single-line diagrams (SLDs), required for the Generation Interconnection or Change Request (GINR) submission.
  • You provide RIOO INR access to the project if we are to complete the RIOO substation details.
