Dominion Energy Model Quality Tests

Dominion FIR Attachment 7 tests and PJM model checks, run on your PSCAD and PSS/E models and written up for submission.

About this module

What this module covers.

Dominion Energy Virginia (DEV) projects in the PJM footprint require model quality testing per DEV's Facility Interconnection Requirements (FIR) Attachment 7, alongside the PJM Dynamic Model Development Guidelines for Interconnection Analysis (DMDG) PSS/E checks. PJM owns model review for Dominion-zone projects. This module conducts the required DEV FIR and PJM DMDG studies to validate your dynamic models. Please note a separate test suite exists for PJM EMT distinct from Dominion's requirements.

At a glance

Module: 059
Kind: Modeling studies
Governing body: PJM
Applies to: Before and after commercial operation
Typical time: Two to three weeks, all in, including your review

Dashboard capabilities

  • Model quality test (MQT) workspace in the GridStrong Dashboard
  • Model Workspace Management across PSCAD and PSS/E
  • PSCAD and PSS/E Simulations
  • Plant Evidence Locker for source documentation
  • Automated MQT report generation

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Perform all required DEV FIR Attachment 7 and PJM DMDG tests (full list below).
    • Benchmark results across PSCAD and PSS/E models.
    • Coordinate with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on modeling deficiencies identified during testing.
    • Prepare the report for your submission to Dominion and PJM.

Tests: Flat / steady state

  • Flat Run (Pmax x Qmax/Qmin); energy-storage-only flat (Pmin x Qmax/Qmin)
  • PJM Flat Start (20 s, no disturbance)

Tests: Small steps

  • Small frequency step up / down (+/-2%, 5 s)
  • Small voltage step up / down (+/-2%, 5 s)

Tests: Faults & ride-through

  • 9-cycle three-phase bolted fault at the point of interconnection (POI)
  • PJM voltage ride-through (VRT) test (9-cycle 3-phase fault, single machine infinite bus)
  • High-voltage ride-through (HVRT) step (1.19 pu / 1.24 pu by POI voltage class)
  • Low-voltage ride-through (LVRT) (DEV FIR voltage profile)
  • High- and low-frequency ride-through (HFRT / LFRT) (DEV FIR frequency profiles)
  • Short circuit ratio (SCR) stability sweep (SCR 10 down to 2, 9-cycle fault)

Final deliverables

  • Dominion MQT report including results from all required tests.
  • Updated PSCAD and PSS/E simulation models where applicable (charged under the related modules).

What we need from you

  • Latest PSCAD and PSS/E simulation models including collector system, main power transformer, power plant controller, and all necessary control and protection.
  • Single-line diagram of the plant.
  • DEV FIR voltage and frequency ride-through profiles.
  • User manuals and OEM documentation.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • Energy storage plants also run the charging-mode flat cases.
  • You supply all required models and site documentation.

Run this module on one site.

Tell us the plant and the deadline. An engineer confirms the inputs, the schedule and what the Dashboard needs from you.
