PJM EMT Model Quality Tests

The PJM electromagnetic transient model-quality battery, run once and reusable across PJM transmission owner zones.

About this module

What this module covers.

PJM requires electromagnetic transient (EMT) model quality testing for inverter-based resources, per the PJM EMT Model Development Guidelines (Rev 0) Section 4. This module runs the PJM EMT model-quality battery to validate your dynamic models against PJM's performance criteria. The suite is reusable across PJM transmission-owner zones.

At a glance

Module: 069
Kind: Modeling studies
Governing body: PJM
Applies to: Before and after commercial operation
Typical time: Two to three weeks, all in, including your review

Dashboard capabilities

  • Model quality test (MQT) workspace in the GridStrong Dashboard
  • Model Workspace Management across PSCAD and PSS/E
  • PSCAD and PSS/E Simulations
  • Plant Evidence Locker for source documentation
  • Automated MQT report generation

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

  • Perform the full PJM EMT model-quality battery (18 tests; full list below).
    • Benchmark EMT (PSCAD) results against positive-sequence (PSS/E) where applicable.
    • Coordinate with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) on modeling deficiencies identified during testing.
    • Prepare the MQT report for your submission to PJM.

Tests: Steps / steady state

  • EMT flat start (15 s)
  • Active power reference step down
  • Frequency step up (+0.3 Hz) and step down with headroom (-0.3 Hz)
  • Voltage step up / down (+/-0.03 pu)

Tests: Faults

  • Three-phase-to-ground fault (bolted, 9 cycles)
  • Single line-to-ground fault (bolted, 9 cycles)
  • Line-to-line fault (bolted, 9 cycles)

Tests: Ride-through (PRC-024 profiles)

  • Low- and high-voltage ride-through (LVRT / HVRT) profiles
  • Overvoltage ride-through (1.20 pu)
  • High- and low-frequency ride-through (HFRT / LFRT) profiles

Tests: Grid strength & disturbance

  • System strength test at short circuit ratios (SCR) 5, 3, 1.5 and lower, per the guideline
  • Phase angle change +/-25 deg
  • High rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) (+/-5 Hz/s sequence)

Final deliverables

  • PJM EMT MQT report including results from all required tests.
  • Updated PSCAD and PSS/E simulation models where applicable (charged under the related modules).

What we need from you

  • Latest PSCAD and PSS/E simulation models including collector system, main power transformer, power plant controller, and all necessary control and protection.
  • Single-line diagram of the plant.
  • PRC-024 voltage and frequency ride-through settings.
  • User manuals and OEM documentation.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • Based on PJM EMT Model Development Guidelines Rev 0.
  • You supply all required models and site documentation.
