PRC-024-4 Ride-Through Event Review for Synchronous Generators

Disturbance records from your synchronous plant checked against the standard's no-trip zones, with any trip inside them analyzed and corrected.

About this module

What this module covers.

PRC-024-4 applies to synchronous generators, Type 1 and Type 2 wind resources, and synchronous condensers; inverter-based resources (IBRs) are covered by PRC-029-2. It requires each Generator Owner and Transmission Owner to set applicable frequency protection in accordance with PRC-024-4 Attachment 1 (R1) and applicable voltage protection in accordance with PRC-024-4 Attachment 2 (R2), such that the protection does not cause the Facility to trip within the "no trip zone" during a frequency or voltage excursion, except for documented and communicated regulatory or equipment limitations (R3).

This module screens disturbance records from your synchronous plant against the PRC-024-4 no-trip zones and, when protection tripped inside a zone, records the analysis, root cause, and corrective action in an event review workflow and report.

At a glance

Module: 080
Kind: Event analysis
Governing body: NERC
Applies to: Operating plants
Typical time: Days per event, not weeks

Dashboard capabilities

  • Every Common Format for Transient Data Exchange (COMTRADE) record from your plant is screened against the PRC-024-4 no-trip zones when your plant profile records synchronous generation; IBR plants are not screened under this standard.
  • You see the voltage and frequency excursions drawn against the no-trip zones, with each excursion listed.
  • A record that stayed inside the no-trip zones, or whose trip happened outside them, passes; a trip inside a zone is reported as a finding naming the crossing and the time.
  • From a finding you open the PRC-024-4 event review workflow with the excursions already filled in, and record the findings, the root cause, the corrective action with its schedule, and the supporting evidence in one place.
  • You receive a PRC-024-4 event review report in the same format as our other event review reports.

Support services

What GridStrong does inside this module.

Task 1: Develop Compliance Procedure

  • Create an audit-ready compliance procedure for meeting the PRC-024-4 requirements, working collaboratively across your engineering, operations, and compliance departments. This includes:
    • Identifying applicable assets, functions, subject matter experts (SMEs), roles, responsibilities, and ownership
    • Determining specific actions and evidence to demonstrate compliance with specific requirements and measures
    • Conducting a gap analysis comparing current practices with the standard's requirements, identifying missing processes, incomplete documentation, any staff training needed, etc.
    • Developing clear step-by-step procedures for PRC-024-4 that align with your internal controls and documentation policies, including review of trips inside the no-trip zones, root-cause analysis, and corrective action tracking
    • Establishing compliance timelines that align with the standard's deadlines
    • Defining specific compliance evidence per site

Task 2: Ride-Through Event Review (for each finding)

  • Review the disturbance record against the generator's frequency and voltage protection settings
  • Determine why the protection tripped inside the no-trip zone, including any documented regulatory or equipment limitation
  • Propose corrective actions and a schedule
  • Compile the evidence for the review

Final deliverables

  • Task 1: Compliance procedure for PRC-024-4 event reviews.
  • Task 2: PRC-024-4 event review report for each finding, including findings, root cause, corrective actions, schedule, and evidence.

What we need from you

  • COMTRADE disturbance records from your plant's recorders.
  • Your plant profile's generation technology.
  • Generator frequency, voltage, and volts per hertz protection settings, and any documented regulatory or equipment limitations.

Assumptions and considerations

How the scope is bounded.

  • You supply the disturbance records and protection settings needed for each review.
  • Applicability is read from your plant profile's generation technology.
  • Data is assumed to be time synchronized or to carry accurate time stamps across data sources.
  • We do not assume liability for any data or information you supply that is inaccurate or incorrect.
