Power Systems Software Engineer

Turns studies into repeatable Dashboard workflows: validation tooling and simulation plumbing.

About the role

What this role is for.

Every study GridStrong runs by hand is a study the Dashboard should run next time. Power Systems Engineering takes the method from Special Studies and the generation teams and turns it into a workflow: model inspection, verification against the plant profile, simulation in PSS®E, PSCAD or TSAT on cloud Windows machines, automated assessment of results and the report. That is what lets Power Systems take on more studies without hiring in proportion, and it is the speed every customer-facing team sells.

You will build those workflows. You write the code that decodes model files, rebuilds topology, drives the simulators, extracts results and checks them against PRC-029-2, MQT and MOD test criteria, and you build the validation tooling that proves the engine matches what an engineer would do.

At a glance

Team: Software Engineering
Level: Engineer
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director of Power Systems Engineering, Applied AI, the Special Studies and Generation Studies engineers, the VP of Power Systems, and the QA channel where engineers report what broke.

What you will do

  • Build study workflows end to end: inputs, model handling, simulation orchestration, assessment logic and report generation.
  • Build simulation plumbing: PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT automation on cloud Windows machines, test harnesses, scenario and SCR profile management and progress tracking.
  • Build validation tooling that benchmarks engine output against engineer-produced results and against OEM documentation.
  • Extend model readers for new OEM models, user-defined models and file versions when the engine sees one for the first time.
  • Pair with Special Studies and Generation Studies engineers to turn worked examples into specifications and then code.
  • Fix study-engine bugs reported in QA within days and confirm with the reporting engineer.
  • Write the internal documentation engineers use to run and troubleshoot workflows.

What we are looking for

  • Four or more years of software engineering in Python, with production code you are proud of.
  • Experience automating engineering or scientific tools: PSS®E or PSCAD scripting is ideal; MATLAB, Simulink or similar is relevant.
  • Understanding of power system dynamics at the level of a power engineering degree or equivalent experience: you know what a DYR file is and why a flat run matters.
  • Experience with job orchestration, file parsing and numerical results processing.
  • Comfortable in a Ruby on Rails codebase alongside Python services.
  • Clear written communicator who pushes context in Slack.

Nice to have

  • Hands-on study experience: you have run a ride-through or MQT study yourself.
  • Windows automation and cloud VM orchestration.
  • Experience with report generation pipelines.

The first 90 days

  • You have shipped a change to a live study workflow and a Power Systems engineer has used it on a client study.
  • You have fixed engine bugs end to end, from QA report to confirmed fix.
  • You own one workflow component and its validation suite.
