PRC-019-2 coordination studies
A consultant takes six to eight weeks for one PRC-019-2 coordination study. Twelve plants, wind, solar and storage, were studied in a week, every number traced to a page in the plant's own files.
A large renewable owner was changing relay and inverter settings across its fleet to meet the new ride-through rules. Under PRC-019-2, a change like that calls for a fresh study of how the plant's voltage controls, limiters and protection coordinate. The owner needed twelve at once: wind, solar and solar-plus-storage plants, about 3,000 MW across several states and grid regions.
The studies on file were consultant reports of varying age, some nearly ten years old. A consultant quotes six to eight weeks for one.
PRC-019-2 requires the owner to show, for each plant, that protection trips only outside the plant's operating capability, that the voltage regulation limits sit inside both the protection limits and the plant's capability, and that overcurrent, volts-per-hertz and overvoltage protection coordinate with each other. The study is redone whenever the settings or the equipment change.
Each plant's relay files, manufacturer documents, settings exports and prior reports were pulled into its plant record. The study reconciled the as-left relay settings against the source files, computed the voltage and time margin of every element against the turbine or inverter limiter, the plant controller band and the transformer tap band, checked every overcurrent pickup against load and damage curves, drew the coordination figures on each voltage plane, searched the plant's files for pending changes, and listed exactly what data the owner or the manufacturer still owed.
Every claim cites a page in a source document. An independent engineering read of each study came before sign-off.
Two plants were studied first, one wind and one solar-plus-storage, then the remaining ten in parallel over a weekend. All twelve were complete and in the owner's dashboard within a week of the start.
Each study runs 30,000 to 50,000 words with dozens of tables and the full set of coordination figures. The first study alone has nearly 1,000 citations.
The owner has a current baseline for every plant, with the open data items listed per plant and per owner.
By hand, twelve studies at six to eight weeks each is a year of calendar time or a dozen engineers. Done this way they cover the whole plant rather than a sample of relays, every number traces to a document, and the next re-coordination starts from a living record instead of a PDF. When the settings change again, the study updates instead of starting over.
