Power Systems Engineer, Generation Studies

Pre-COD MQT and post-COD PRC and MOD studies, and model development for generation owners.

About the role

What this role is for.

Generation Studies is the largest division in Power Systems and serves the biggest renewable owners in North America. Before commercial operation, a plant's PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT models go through model quality testing with the operator. After commercial operation, the owner has to prove ride-through under PRC-029-2, verify models under MOD-026, verify reactive capability under MOD-025 and keep MOD-032 data current, plant after plant.

You will run those studies in the Dashboard. The engine does the mechanical parts: it decodes the model, rebuilds the topology, extracts protection tiers, spins up the simulation and drafts the assessment notes. You bring the engineering judgment: is the model sane, does it match the plant, what caused the trip, is this a pass. Clients follow your tasks live, so the quality and speed of your work is the sales pitch.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Engineer
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director and Principal Engineer of Generation Studies, the Manager of Power Systems Studies, protection engineers, the Forward Deployed Managers who prepare plant files, Power Systems Engineering, and the modeling and compliance staff at generation owners.

What you will do

  • Run PRC-029-2 ride-through studies: inspect the model, verify it against the plant profile, run the standard test suite, assess pass and fail and produce the workflow report.
  • Run pre-COD model quality tests for ERCOT and other operators and resolve failing test cases with the OEM and the client.
  • Run MOD-025, MOD-026 and MOD-027 verification studies and MOD-032 data submittals.
  • Verify, update and build PSS®E and PSCAD models to as-left settings, and benchmark them against each other and TSAT where required.
  • Review parameter verification reports and raise RFIs when relay files, PPC settings or OEM data are missing or inconsistent.
  • Carry two to six named clients and keep every task and workflow visible to them in the Dashboard.
  • Report engine and workflow bugs, confirm fixes and contribute worked examples for the next automation.

What we are looking for

  • Three or more years running dynamic studies in PSS®E and PSCAD, including inverter-based plants.
  • Understanding of inverter and wind turbine OEM models, plant controllers and protection settings.
  • Working knowledge of PRC-029-2, MOD-025, MOD-026 and MOD-032, and the ERCOT NOGRR 245 ride-through requirements.
  • Able to read a relay settings file and a one-line diagram and tell what will trip.
  • Clear written communication: your notes and reports go directly to the client.
  • Comfortable working in the open, with clients watching progress in real time.

Nice to have

  • TSAT or PSLF experience.
  • Python scripting for PSS®E automation.
  • EIT or PE registration.

The first 90 days

  • You have completed PRC-029-2 studies end to end in the Dashboard, reviewed and accepted by the Principal.
  • You carry your first named clients with tasks and workflows live.
  • You have raised and closed RFIs with a client and an OEM on your own.
