Protection Engineer

Protection studies, settings reviews and PRC-028-1 work for inverter-based plants.

About the role

What this role is for.

Knowing what is actually at the plant is half of every ride-through study. A typical consultant checks three or four of a plant's twenty-five relays. GridStrong loads every trusted setting into the Dashboard: every relay's 27 and 59 elements, the inverter and turbine protection tiers, the plant controller trip logic. That is what makes the PRC-029-2 results faster and more accurate, and it is protection work.

You will do that work. You extract settings from relay files and OEM documents into the Dashboard, review them against the ride-through curves, run coordination and settings reviews, and lead PRC-028-1 and NOGRR 255 disturbance monitoring work plant by plant across customer fleets.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Engineer
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director of Protection Engineering and the Senior Protection Engineer, Generation Studies engineers, Compliance Services Managers, Forward Deployed Managers, and the protection and plant engineering staff at generation owners.

What you will do

  • Collect and extract relay settings (SEL, GE, ABB and others), inverter and turbine protection tiers and PPC trip logic into the plant profile in the Dashboard, and confirm the current source with the client.
  • Review protection settings against the PRC-029-2 and NOGRR 245 ride-through curves and flag settings that will trip inside the no-trip zone.
  • Run PRC-028-1 and NOGRR 255 work: disturbance monitoring gap assessments, equipment and settings specification, validation and evidence packages.
  • Run protection coordination and settings reviews for new and existing inverter-based plants.
  • Verify that the protection representation in PSS®E and PSCAD models matches the plant, and raise discrepancies to the study engineers.
  • Carry two to six named clients and keep tasks visible to them in the Dashboard.
  • Document review steps as worked examples for automation.

What we are looking for

  • Three or more years in protection engineering at a utility, generation owner, OEM or consultancy.
  • Hands-on experience with relay settings files and software (SEL QuickSet, GE EnerVista or similar).
  • Understanding of inverter and wind turbine protection: voltage and frequency tiers, RoCoF, anti-islanding and PPC behavior.
  • Working knowledge of PRC-028-1, PRC-029-2 and the ERCOT NOGRR 245 and 255 requirements.
  • Able to read one-line diagrams, relay settings and OEM protection tables and reconcile them.
  • Clear, careful documentation habits: your work is audit evidence.

Nice to have

  • Experience selecting and commissioning disturbance monitoring equipment: DFRs, PMUs and sequence of events recorders.
  • PSCAD or PSS®E exposure.
  • EIT or PE registration.

The first 90 days

  • You have extracted and verified full protection profiles for several plants, reviewed and accepted by the Senior Protection Engineer.
  • You have completed a PRC-028-1 gap assessment for one plant end to end.
  • You carry your first named clients in the Dashboard.
