Principal Engineer, Load Studies

Owns the first load clients end to end.

About the role

What this role is for.

Data centers and other large loads are interconnecting at a scale the grid has not seen, and the people building them have almost no power systems engineers. GridStrong is building a load studies practice on the same Dashboard that runs ride-through evaluations, model development and compliance programs for inverter-based generation. The first clients need an engineer who owns their work completely.

You will be that engineer. You own the first load clients end to end: the interconnection and ride-through evaluations, the dynamic load models, the study reports, the RFIs and the relationship with the client's electrical engineers. You work beside the division head, who carries the sales motion, and you define what the Dashboard automates for load first.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Principal
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director, Load Studies, the VP of Power Systems, Power Systems Engineering, Client Success, and the electrical engineering, development and interconnection staff at data center and large load clients.

What you will do

  • Own two to six load clients end to end: scope, model data collection, studies, reports, reviews and the handoff of evidence into the Dashboard.
  • Build and validate dynamic load models for data centers and large industrial loads in PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT, including UPS, drives, co-located generation and storage.
  • Run load ride-through evaluations against ERCOT, PJM, SPP and emerging NERC requirements, and voltage and frequency sensitivity studies at the point of interconnection.
  • Act as the technical authority on load models for the client and for the operator reviewing them.
  • Write the specifications Power Systems Engineering uses to automate load studies: inputs, steps, pass and fail logic, worked examples.
  • Review deliverables from the Load Studies engineers as the division's reviewer of record.
  • Track operator requirement changes for large loads and translate them into study scopes.

What we are looking for

  • Eight or more years in power system studies, including load modeling, voltage stability or industrial interconnection work.
  • Hands-on PSS®E and PSCAD, with experience building models from equipment data rather than only running vendor models.
  • Working knowledge of ERCOT large load interconnection requirements and the NERC standards framework (MOD-032, PRC-029-2) now extending to loads.
  • Able to run a client relationship directly, including RFIs and difficult conversations about missing data.
  • Clear technical writer.
  • Experience reviewing other engineers' studies.

Nice to have

  • Experience with data center electrical design or commissioning.
  • TSAT or PSLF experience.
  • Professional Engineer license.

The first 90 days

  • You own the first load client in the Dashboard, with tasks and workflows the client can follow.
  • The first dynamic load model is built, validated against equipment data and reviewed with the division head.
  • Power Systems Engineering has your first specification for a load study workflow.
