Power Systems Engineer, ISO Studies

MQT reviews and study support for grid operators.

About the role

What this role is for.

A system operator sends GridStrong a model package: PSS®E standard library and user-defined models, PSCAD and TSAT, with the required files. The Dashboard runs the full model quality test suite: flat runs at multiple active and reactive power scenarios, voltage and frequency ride-through tests, protection trip tests and benchmarking across platforms, with pass and fail automated. The operator returns the report to the interconnection customer, who fixes what failed and resubmits. No one hand-types the report.

You will be the engineer behind that service. You review what the engine produces, judge the gray areas, explain failures to the operator's planning staff and run the study support an operator asks for beyond the MQT itself. One regional transmission organization runs on the service today, a second is onboarding, and DOE-funded pilots are under way with ISO-NE, ERCOT and CAISO.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Engineer
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director and Principal Engineer of ISO Studies, Power Systems Engineering, Generation Studies on model questions, and the planning and interconnection staff at system operators.

What you will do

  • Review MQT results across PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT submissions, confirm the engine's pass and fail calls and judge the gray areas.
  • Diagnose failing test cases: model errors, version mismatches, missing DYR files, protection misrepresentation or test setup problems, and document the cause for the operator.
  • Run study support for operators: ride-through screening, benchmarking, model validation against MOD-026 and MOD-027 submissions and custom test cases.
  • Maintain and extend the operator test suites in the Dashboard as business practice manuals and modeling requirements change.
  • Onboard new operators: map their requirements to the Dashboard and run the first submissions alongside their staff.
  • Report engine bugs and contribute worked examples to Power Systems Engineering.
  • Keep every review visible as tasks in the Dashboard so the operator can follow progress.

What we are looking for

  • Three or more years in dynamic modeling or interconnection studies, with hands-on PSS®E and PSCAD.
  • Understanding of how an ISO or RTO interconnection process works and what a model quality test is for.
  • Working knowledge of MOD-026 and MOD-032, the NERC inverter-based resource modeling guidelines and the PRC-029-2 ride-through curves.
  • Able to read user-defined model documentation and OEM protection tables.
  • Clear technical writer who can explain a failure to a planning engineer in a paragraph.
  • Comfortable with volume: operators submit in batches and turnaround matters.

Nice to have

  • TSAT experience.
  • Prior work at or for an ISO, RTO or transmission planning department.
  • Python scripting for simulation automation.

The first 90 days

  • You have reviewed MQT submissions end to end and your calls have been accepted by the Principal.
  • You have diagnosed and documented failing cases for an operator without escalation.
  • You understand the test suites well enough to propose a change to one.
