Power Systems Engineer, Special Studies

Runs the studies the Dashboard cannot yet automate.

About the role

What this role is for.

Most GridStrong studies run as automated workflows. Special Studies runs the rest: the first project for a new consulting client, the event analysis an operator wants explained under PRC-030-1, the control interaction study, the weak-grid screen, the harmonics question at a point of interconnection with a low short-circuit ratio. The work changes with every client, and each project teaches the company what to automate next.

You will run those studies under the Principal Engineer, Special Studies. You set up models and test cases by hand in PSCAD, PSS®E, PSLF or TSAT, run them, process the results and write the report. Then you document the method well enough that Power Systems Engineering can turn it into a workflow.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Engineer
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director and Principal Engineer of Special Studies, Power Systems Engineering, Generation Studies and ISO Studies, and the engineering staff at consulting clients.

What you will do

  • Set up and run EMT and RMS studies with custom test cases: event replay, control interaction, oscillation screening, weak-grid ride-through and harmonics.
  • Build or adapt plant models from OEM data, including user-defined models, and benchmark across PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT.
  • Process results and write the technical report under the Principal's review.
  • Reproduce operator-reported events in simulation and document root cause for PRC-030-1 analyses.
  • Document each method as a worked example, with inputs, steps and outputs, so it can be automated.
  • Support Generation and ISO Studies when a model behaves in a way the standard suites do not explain.
  • Keep tasks and workflows visible to the client in the Dashboard.

What we are looking for

  • Three or more years running dynamic studies, with hands-on PSCAD and PSS®E or PSLF.
  • Experience with inverter-based resource models, plant controllers and protection representation.
  • Working knowledge of PRC-029-2, PRC-030-1, MOD-026 and MOD-032.
  • Comfortable with Python for simulation automation and results processing.
  • Able to write a method and results section that a senior engineer accepts without rewriting.
  • Curious and self-directed: the problem is rarely defined when it arrives.

Nice to have

  • TSAT experience.
  • Experience with harmonics or sub-synchronous oscillation studies.
  • EIT or PE registration.

The first 90 days

  • You have run your first non-standard study end to end under the Principal's review.
  • You have delivered one documented worked example to Power Systems Engineering.
  • You can set up a custom PSCAD test harness case without help.
