Director, ISO Studies

Heads the division serving system operators, runs the ISO sales channel and owns the model review standard operators rely on.

About the role

What this role is for.

System operators decide whether a power plant gets built, and the model quality test is the gate. GridStrong runs that test as an automated subscription: the operator sends a model package, the Dashboard runs the full PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT suite, and the report comes back with pass and fail assessed. A regional transmission organization runs on it today, a second is onboarding, and DOE-funded pilots are under way with ISO-NE, ERCOT and CAISO.

You will head the ISO Studies division. You own the review standard operators trust when they accept or reject a model, and you run the ISO sales channel, from the first conversation with a planning department to a signed subscription. You work beside the division's Principal Engineer, who owns the ISO clients technically.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Director
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Principal Engineer, ISO Studies, the ISO Studies engineers, the VP of Power Systems, Power Systems Engineering, Client Success and Operations on contracts, and planning and interconnection staff at each operator.

What you will do

  • Own delivery across every ISO account: MQT turnaround, review quality and escalations when a model fails for reasons the engine cannot explain.
  • Run the ISO sales channel: identify operators adopting modeling requirements, run the technical evaluation and bring the subscription to contract.
  • Set and publish the model review standard: what a reviewer checks in a PSS®E, PSCAD or TSAT submission, what the engine checks, what a human signs.
  • Onboard each new operator: map their business practice manual and interconnection process to the Dashboard's test suites.
  • Hire and lead the MQT review engineers and hold their client load inside the two to six client band.
  • Feed Power Systems Engineering the review steps still done by hand so they become automated workflows.
  • Represent GridStrong in operator working groups on model quality and EMT requirements.

What we are looking for

  • Ten or more years in power systems, including interconnection studies, model quality testing or dynamic model review at an ISO, RTO, utility or consultancy.
  • Working fluency in PSS®E and PSCAD; able to judge whether a dynamic model package is fit for a planning case.
  • Experience selling or scoping technical services to operators or utilities, including procurement and sole-source processes.
  • Deep knowledge of NERC MOD-026, MOD-027 and MOD-032 and the FERC reforms shaping operator modeling requirements.
  • Experience leading engineers, setting a review standard and defending it to a client.
  • Clear writer: your standard, proposals and reports are read by operator staff and interconnection customers.

Nice to have

  • TSAT experience and cross-platform benchmarking.
  • Professional Engineer license in a US state or Canadian province.
  • Prior work in an ISO or RTO planning or interconnection department.

The first 90 days

  • You have reviewed every open MQT engagement, met each operator contact and own the delivery calendar.
  • The model review standard is published in the Dashboard and in use.
  • The operator pipeline is mapped and a technical evaluation is scheduled.
  • Power Systems Engineering has your ranked list of review steps to automate next.
