Principal Engineer, Special Studies

Technical authority on first projects; runs the complex, not-yet-automated studies.

About the role

What this role is for.

When a new consulting client brings GridStrong a problem the Dashboard cannot run yet, you are the engineer who solves it. Harmonics at a weak point of interconnection, a sub-synchronous oscillation screen, a control interaction between two plants sharing a bus, an event the operator wants explained under PRC-030-1: these are first projects, and the quality of the first project decides whether the client becomes a repeat customer.

You will be the technical authority in Special Studies, working beside the Director. You lead the engineering on each first project, carry two to six named clients end to end, and turn what you learn into specifications for Power Systems Engineering so the next client gets the same result as an automated workflow.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Principal
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director, Special Studies, the Special Studies engineers, the VP of Power Systems, Power Systems Engineering, Generation Studies and ISO Studies, and the senior engineers at consulting clients.

What you will do

  • Lead the technical work on each first project: method, model setup, simulation plan, results and the written report.
  • Run EMT and RMS studies in PSCAD, PSS®E, PSLF and TSAT, including custom test cases outside the standard NERC and operator suites.
  • Build and validate models from OEM data when no usable model exists, and benchmark PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT against each other.
  • Own two to six named clients end to end: scope, RFIs, delivery, review and the handoff into the Dashboard.
  • Write the specification for each study type to be automated: inputs, steps, pass and fail logic, worked examples.
  • Review deliverables from the Special Studies engineers and act as reviewer of record.
  • Support Generation and ISO Studies on the hardest model and event questions.

What we are looking for

  • Ten or more years running power system studies, with deep EMT experience in PSCAD and RMS experience in PSS®E or PSLF.
  • Direct experience with inverter-based resource modeling: OEM models, plant controllers, protection tiers and ride-through behavior.
  • Working knowledge of PRC-029-2, PRC-030-1, MOD-026 and MOD-032 and the ERCOT NOGRR 245 requirements.
  • Able to write a study method and results report that a client's senior engineer accepts without rework.
  • Comfortable owning client relationships directly, not only the engineering.
  • Experience reviewing other engineers' work.

Nice to have

  • TSAT experience.
  • Python scripting for simulation automation and results processing.
  • Professional Engineer license.

The first 90 days

  • You have taken technical lead on the first Special Studies project and the client has seen interim results.
  • You have written one study specification and reviewed it with Power Systems Engineering.
  • You carry your first named clients in the Dashboard with tasks and workflows visible to them.
