Power Systems Engineer, Load Studies

Load studies and ride-through evaluations for data centers and large loads.

About the role

What this role is for.

Data centers measured in hundreds of megawatts are interconnecting across ERCOT, PJM, SPP and other markets, and operators are writing ride-through, modeling and monitoring requirements for them that mirror what generation owners meet under PRC-029-2 and MOD-032. GridStrong is building the load studies practice on the same Dashboard that runs those studies for generation.

You will run load studies under the Principal Engineer, Load Studies: dynamic load models, ride-through evaluations, voltage and frequency sensitivity, and co-located generation and storage cases. The practice is new, so you will also help write the playbook and the worked examples that Power Systems Engineering turns into workflows.

At a glance

Team: Power Systems
Level: Engineer
Location: Remote, United States or Canada
Works with: The Director and Principal Engineer of Load Studies, Power Systems Engineering, Client Success, and the electrical engineering and development staff at data center and large load clients.

What you will do

  • Build and validate dynamic load models for data centers and large industrial loads in PSS®E, PSCAD and TSAT from equipment data: UPS, drives, cooling and backup generation.
  • Run load ride-through evaluations against ERCOT, PJM, SPP and emerging NERC requirements and document pass and fail.
  • Run voltage and frequency sensitivity, point of interconnection and co-located generation and storage studies.
  • Prepare operator submittals and respond to planning staff questions with the Principal.
  • Raise RFIs with client electrical engineers when equipment data is missing or inconsistent.
  • Document methods as worked examples for automation.
  • Keep tasks and workflows visible to the client in the Dashboard.

What we are looking for

  • Two or more years running dynamic studies in PSS®E, with PSCAD exposure.
  • Understanding of load modeling, voltage stability and how large facilities behave during grid disturbances.
  • Familiarity with ERCOT large load interconnection processes or the NERC standards framework.
  • Able to read electrical one-lines and equipment data sheets and turn them into model parameters.
  • Clear technical writer.
  • Self-directed: the practice is new and you will be defining parts of it.

Nice to have

  • Data center or industrial facility electrical design experience.
  • TSAT experience or Python scripting.
  • EIT or PE registration.

The first 90 days

  • You have built and validated a dynamic load model reviewed and accepted by the Principal.
  • You have run a load ride-through evaluation end to end in the Dashboard.
  • You have delivered one worked example to Power Systems Engineering.
